“Ever since Frida came into my life four years ago I have had a profound sense that the way she interacts with humans was something more. Something magical and healing. She is a kind and generous animal and whenever children or grown-ups see her and spend time with her their faces light up and they feel compelled to come to be with her again.”
Healing with Donkeys
Georgia English is an experienced rider and handler of all equines. Trained as a riding instructor and horse handler she has owned and raised horses and donkeys for over thirty years and is expanding upon her skills and her unique animals by offering time on her farm to children and their parents. More than a petting zoo, your children will find a place for their unique energy and curiosity and learn how to be around healing animals and expand their knowledge while being outdoors in a safe and responsible environment.
Asinotherapy is a fancy name for donkey therapy. Donkeys have a unique kind energy and respond well to attention and love from children. At Georgia’s farm, there are three wonderful donkeys that thrive on the petting and grooming and the love that comes from interacting with children and adults. Time spent in a safe environment at the farm where the children learn to groom and pet the donkeys and eventually sit on them and are lead around by Georgia is invaluable time for all children.
Therapeutic activities with donkeys are proven to do the following:
· Lower blood pressure
· Reduce anxiety and stress
· Develop life skills, specifically self-esteem
· Build self-confidence by being around, touching, stroking and handling a donkey
· Empathy and managing emotions, in children and adults, helping them develop the emotional and psychological capacity to deal with challenging and stressful situations in the real world.
· Sessions with the donkeys also help develop adaptive and positive behavior
· Build resilience: (When a child is able to get over their fear of interacting with an animal much bigger than themselves, this helps to build resilience and confidence. This experience can change the neurology so that the next time they face a scary situation, they will know it’s possible to come out the other side of their fear. That confidence didn’t exist before - the experience with the donkey has rewired the brain so that they are more able to overcome their fears and approach difficult and challenging situations.)
Frida is the biggest donkey at eleven years old she is wise and well versed at being ridden and standing calmly while children groom her.
Iris is younger but very sweet and easy and would rather be around humans than do anything else.
Diego is the smallest donkey and is less intimidating because of his size.
There is also the option of beginning riding lessons on a quiet older mare called Maitai who has had years of experience with small children.
